Math Sport is a Canadian running shoe company specializing in affordable custom shoes. Founded by Mathieu Raymond, Math Sport takes the frustration out of buying the perfect shoe. And they are about to hit the trail running market with a new design that will revolutionize off-roading.

Raymond has spent most of his life as a competitive runner in his hometown of Laval, Quebec. Like many runners, he spent his off hours working in a running shop, and amongst the many things he learned on the job there was one simple truth that stuck with him: It is very difficult to find the right pair of shoes in a particular shop at a particular time. Cue the light bulb. 

In 2014, Raymond began two years of research and development culminating in a crowd-funding campaign and the launch of the first Math Sport custom running shoe in 2016. Since then, the company, with team members stretched from Montreal to Vancouver, has been in the business of creating Canadian shoes for Canadian weather and terrain. 

“I took a long time because I had a lot to learn and I wanted to do something pretty unusual in the running shoe market,” Raymond explains. 

Math Sport takes the running shoe game to the next level by interviewing customers to find out how they run, what they want out of a running shoe, what they’re hoping to do, and a slew of other questions that aren’t usually part of the typical shoe shopping conversation.

During a 15-20 minute interview, the Math Sport expert helps select the perfect pair from the 162 models that can be created.

If you’re not sure how you run or what kind of shoe works best for your feet, Raymond suggests calling the store to speak with a consultant. Answering a few quick questions will result in the best shoe for you, and Math Sport will send you two sample sizes to try to make sure the fit is exact. 

“We have our customers talk with an expert for 15 or 20 minutes so they make sure you get the right pair of shoes out of the box,” Raymond says. “We ask questions about how many runs they are doing, any problems or injuries, what shoes they are used to, what the sole of the shoe looks like, the forefoot, the wear and tear as well as what goals they have. We make sure they get the right shoe.”

Math Sport put the same formula to work to create a new trail running shoe that Raymond describes as “a road running shoe with grip.” While some trail runners can be bulky and inflexible with a bewildering array of gizmos and special effects, Raymond says that Math Sport’s shoes are just the opposite.

“The trail running shoes are amazing compared to everything you can find on the market,” Raymond says. “It is a road running shoe with grip: lightweight, responsive, beautiful, no added technology just lugs and a good rubber compound.”

Add the custom creation element, and it’s a formula for one comfortable ride in the woods. 

Raymond knows how important it is to create a comfortable running shoe, whether for the trails or the city streets. Anyone who has run more than a few kilometres knows the importance of comfort. And it isn’t as though custom running shoes are only for competitive runners, far from it. The anatomical fit brings comfort to all, whether the fleet of foot or in low and slow mode. 

“Most of our clients are beginners or intermediate runners that want to change their running but don’t know how to do it,” Raymond says 

Shaving time off of your race speed has a lot to do with the shoes you wear. This understanding is what sets Math Sport apart from his competitors. When customers work with Math Sport, the first step is to take images of their feet for a 3D model to create a custom insole. From there, with the help of an expert, runners choose everything from the colour of the laces to the thickness of the midsole.

Currently, components for Math Sport shoes are manufactured in China. However, they are still largely rooted, designed and assembled in Montreal. Although, as Raymond explains, the growth in the running market and the company, means it might be time to begin some assembly overseas. 

Although the recent pandemic has turned the world upside down, the silver lining is that more people are getting outside for exercise and mental well-being. And that means a bit of a boom in the running and cycling spaces.

As a result, Math Sport is experiencing an influx of orders and new customers are discovering the joys of having running shoes crafted to fit perfectly to their feet and their style of running. 

“A lot of people discovered that running can be helpful and can help you gain energy daily,” Raymond says. 

For Raymond, buying a running shoe shouldn't be about the price tag first. 

“The best running shoe is not the most expensive, says Raymond, it should be about finding the one that you need."
